What's In A Name?

Hello All!

So, we came to the conclusion at the last meeting that we want to be Waldorf-inspired or Waldorf-informed rather than a purely Waldorf school. I believe that we also desire including Montessori methods into the curriculum. For several of us, the Ocean Charter School seems to be well-aligned with the blended curriculum we are after. Take a look at this school (link below and to the right) if you want a general idea of what might be to come. Notice I said general!

So, with that in mind, we moved right along to creating a name for ourselves. We chatted a bit at the last meeting about this as well. Here are some ideas that we have been kicking around at the meetings. Please read them, comment on them, and make your own suggestions. Also, if I missed any from the meeting, please let me know.
Thanks, Alicia

So, I have heard several comments against Oneota Valley. Those against it felt that it was
1) overused
2) too long to shorten down

For example, Pleasant Valley Home School gets shortened to Pleasant Valley, but would ours be shortened to Oneota Valley by people? If so, that isn't unique enough to create a clear identity.

Just comments I have received. I'm not certain how I feel about them.

More feedback and side chatter on the names.

School of the Arts and Sciences sounds too formal/like a prep school or academy.

Suggested fix: School of Arts, Sciences, and Discovery

A couple more ideas and resulting comments:

The Peace School (acronym for Providing Environmental Arts-based Community-focused Education

Seven Springs School (for all of the springs in the area; the number seven is perhaps inaccurate but thought to be the number of springs at Twin Springs)

Driftless Area School (or something else using driftless)

Hi all,

I like your thoughts Alicia. I like Driftless Area School as well as Seven Springs. I do think that there is benefit in terms of a snapshot to interested parents, and to grant reviewers (though I could be wrong!), in a name that includes something like Arts, Sciences and Discovey or Exploration, etc.

I also talked to Karina Klug's mother Cindy today and she told me that we should all visit Viroqua's Waldorf before making our final decision not to be completely a waldorf school. She said there are things with their school that are different than Three Rivers, that might inform us in that process. She strongly encouraged this.

I LOVE Ocean School's curriculum on my quick perusal. I'll try to get back to it tonight, but cooking dinner beckons!

Love,
Parker
